The author concentrates on the failure of James Keiller & Son Ltd. to build on the heady successes of its mid-Victorian years. He evaluates the processes of entrepreneur selection, accepting the view of Mary B. Rose that one of the most basic tasks of businessmen is to choose their successors in such a way as to guarantee a sufficient pool of talent and insure against unforeseen inadequacies and mortalities.
