The article discusses the makeover of the Great Lawn at the Central Park in New York City. The private, nonprofit agency Central Park Conservancy launched the makeover project in 1995. The soil was replaced with a compaction-resistant mix of sand, silt, clay and brewery waste. About 500,000 square feet of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye were laid over the Great Lawn.
