ABSTRACT
The article reports on the development of the Viterbi algorithm by Andrew Viterbi, one of the six finalists for the Millennium Technology Prize, a $1.8 million award given every two years for innovative technologies that have had a significant positive impact on society. The author offers information about the career background and educational attainment of Viterbi. Viterbi algorithm makes handsets more powerful, allowing double or triple the number of users in a particular cell at one time.
