The article reports on the sales performance of shelf-stable meal categories in the U.S. According to Nielsen Strategic Planner data, dollar sales in the prepared foods-dry mixes category, which includes dry pasta and nonpasta dinners, as well as rice mixes, grew 3.5 percent in the 52 weeks ending March 22, 2008 in U.S. food stores. For ready-serve prepared foods, a category that encompasses many canned items, dollar sales grew 0.4 percent, up literally a fraction from 0.3 percent in 2007, while unit volume was down 3.5 percent.
