ABSTRACT
The article reflects on the implications of the death of dictator and Syrian President Hafiz Assad. It relates how he came to power in 1970. It offers a brief personal background of Assad. It states his purpose when he became the president of Syria. It compares Assad's methods of control with Communism. His political dealings were also described in the article. It relates how Assad sought to establish his sons as his heir. Unfortunately, his elder son, Basil was killed in a car crash. He then turned to his second son, Bashar, an optician, who now inherited his throne.
