Reports on the discovery of autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saquenay (ARSACS), a genetic disorder found in an isolated part of northeastern Quebec, Canada. Location of the gene in the DNA sequence; Link between the gene and a rare neurodegenerative disease; Possible role of the encoded protein in protein folding, a phenomenon believed to be involved in the integrity and survival of nerve cells.
