ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the use by Austral Pacific Energy Ltd., owner of the Cheal oil field, of an advanced, flexible control system to pump crude oil in New Zealand. According to Greg Chapman, technical director at Engineering Control Limited (ECL), the systems integrator of Cheal, the oil sets to solid wax so the system control strategy had to be advanced and very flexible. Austral Pacific selected a control system based on automation integrated architecture. It applied a single-control platform for discrete and process applications with open interfaces. Making sure the equipment is familiar to operators is one of the common control philosophies in petrochemical.
