The article surveys the emerging possibilities of nonprofit investigative reporting models. ProPublica is a non-profit news organization dedicated to investigative journalism, and it is financed by a California couple, Herbert M. and Marion Sandler. ProPublica spokesman Richard Tofel talks about the costs of launching a newsroom in New York. The non-profit Center for Public Integrity maintains in-house staffs of investigative reporters, while the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, which is financed mostly by Pulitzer family members, has been successful in obtaining space.
