Some Characteristics of News Memory and Comprehension

Memory and comprehension of radio and television news were studied in two experimental settings. News items dealing with psychologically close subject matters were most easily recalled. A truncated memory phenomenon, where information about places and principals is foregrounded in memory, as well as different types of misunderstandings were found. The studies revealed a close relationship between recall and previous knowledge. The results are discussed in relation to cognitive theories of discourse comprehension and memory, especially schema theories.
