The article reports that despite a backdrop of higher food prices, a dubious economy, and intense competition, retail meat departments in the U.S. performed relatively well during a 12-month cycle when overall consumer spending trends favored supermarkets over most other retail formats. However, with harsh economic headwinds expected to persist through at least the first half of the year, consumer spending patterns have shifted. Many meat shoppers today are favoring smaller pack quantities and cheaper cuts as they look to cope in uncertain times.
