ABSTRACT
This article describes the origins of fighting between followers of Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and his Shiite Islamic co-religionists, who support the Hakim Family. This represents a break from the previous pattern of conflict between members of the Shiite and the Sunni branches of Islam. The Intra-Shiite conflict erupted in Basra, Iraq, where U.S. army troops moved to stem the violence, and a visit from Iraqi prime minister Nuri al-Maliki inflamed it.
