ABSTRACT
The article discusses strategies for the identification of selenometabolites in plant and animal samples. The beneficial effects of selenium (Se) in plants and animals are discussed. The detection of Se in selenometabolites in biological samples has improved with the emergence of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Alternatives to HPLC-ICP-MS is electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS), which are used to identify unknown selenometabolites.
