The article discusses the emergence of the concierge medicine concept in Tucson, Arizona. Internist Steven D. Knope is currently the only physician in Tucson to offer a patient-centered approach. He explains that under a common model for this practice, the patient pays an advance annual retainer without owing any other fees. In 2002, the Society of Concierge Physicians was formed to promote this practice, which was renamed the Society for Innovative Medical Practice Design (SIMPD) in 2005.
