Prevalencia de Helicobacter pylori y de los genotipos vacA y cagA en la saliva de pacientes con gastritis

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori and its cytotoxic genotypes vacA and cagA in the oral cavity of patients suffering chronic gastritis (n = 102). H. pylori was detected by nested PCR in saliva of patients, whereas vacA alelic variants and cagA gene were detected by multiplex PCR. Serum IgG antibodies against H. pylory were measured by an immunoenzimatic method. Sera of seventy-six patients (74%) were positive for IgG anti-H. pylori antibodies, and the bacterium was detected by nested PCR in saliva of 60 of them. vacA and cagA genotypes were detected in 45% (n = 27) of the patients positive for H. pylori: 10% vacA m2 ( n= 6); 8.3% vacA s1 (n = 5); 6.6% vacA s2/cagA (n = 4); 6.6% vacA s2 (n = 4), and 6.6% vacA m1 (n = 4). These results showed that H. pylori is found in the oral cavity, which may be a reservoir for the oral-oral transmission of this bacterium.
