Retail companies from China and Russia that were listed include the Bailian Group and X5 Retail Group. The author suggests that consolidation and modernization of developing retail markets have led to the rise of Chinese and Russian companies. Bailian Group was formed when the government of Shanghai, China merged several companies to increase their competitive strength. X5 was also formed from a merger of companies. Retail company Wal-Mart remains at the top of the rankings.
