ABSTRACT
The article features screenwriter and director Chris Weitz and explores how he was able to overcome the challenges of writing the script of his first ever visual-effects epic, "The Golden Compass." It offers a comparative analysis of the digital visual effects produced for the fantasy epic with Weitz's contemporary love story "About a Boy" and with the animated film "Antz," and what he learned in adapting a fantasy story using 2-D and 3-D computer graphics. It also discusses Weitz approach in bringing out the characters' thoughts and emotions through subtext, action, and symbolism as they were written by the book's author Philip Pullman.
