Lower Supply Voltages Enable Low-Power Portable Electronic Devices

The article examines the benefits of low voltage within portable electronic designs, and showing how the advantages of low power can be achieved. Also presented is the equation of an electronic device's overall power consumption, which comprises of two terms. One way to reduce power consumption is by using clock gating, which avoids unnecessary power dissipation caused by charging and discharging of the clock signal at the unused gates. Another technique is power gating, which uses high threshold voltage transistors or sleep transistors in circuit blocks that switch infrequently. Dynamic threshold-voltage scaling can also be used, wherein the threshold voltage of cells are increased by controlling the substrate biasing.
