ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the open source IP PBX platform from Asterisk. It is stated that the software is not only expected to be a boon for the cash strapped businesses that need an upgradation of their phones, it has also given rise to several vendors that charges for a host of services and technologies that manage to undercut prices charged by traditional IP PBX vendors. It is stated that although Asterisk may not be suitable for all businesses, Asterisk based gear and services can cost one-tenth as much as equipment sold by some other major vendors. An analysis of the technology used and the other technologies available in the market has been presented.
