ABSTRACT
This article reports on a petition filed by four conservation groups in New Mexico to the Interior Department to add the black-tailed prairie dog to the list of endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. The only problem is that these animals are not endangered, and in fact, they are fairly plentiful in many areas of Western states. In 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Service decided that the black-tailed prairie dog was ineligible for inclusion on the list, but the conservation groups are persistent. The Forest Guardians, one of the groups, blamed the U.S. administration for pressuring the service to dismiss the original request for prairie dog protection.
