ABSTRACT
The article discusses how the trials of Captain Alfred Dreyfus split an army and then a nation. The captain's arrest initiated a scandal that polarized French politics, damaged French civil-military relations on the eve of World War I and highlighted the insecure position of Jews in French society. Dreyfus had been nabbed on the basis of documents supplied by one of the Statistical Section's agents, a Madame Bastian (Marie Bastian). Those convinced of Dreyfus' guilt, the anti-Dreyfusards, argued that raison d'état far superseded in importance the fate of one man.
