The article provides a glimpse of the ebb and flow of technology companies selected by "Red Herring" magazine for its pool of the 100 most promising companies in the industry as published since 1997. The magazine had selected 600 private companies, with 52 honored twice. In 1997, most interesting public company on the list was Yahoo, then the search leader with a market capitalization of just slightly over $1 billion, and two consecutive quarters of profit. The list had evolved in 1999 with more Internet firms jumping on the initial public offering (IPO) bandwagon. Two new editions of the list were introduced in 2005, with the inclusion of nanotechnology firm Nano-Tex and security software provider Aruba Networks.
