ABSTRACT
The article discusses Israel-based Check Point Software Technologies, a publicly traded company that specializes in Internet security software. Check point co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Gil Shwed has, unlike founders of similar companies, resisted offers to sell the company. Rather than allow itself to be acquired, Check Point has gone in the other direction by acquiring companies itself including Zone Labs in 2004, and NFR Security and Protect Data in 2006. Shwed is confident that Check Point can survive as a standalone security company despite setbacks including the decision by U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to block Check Point's acquisition of network security company Sourcefire, which supplies security software to the U.S. military.
