ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the allure of mazes and labyrinths. The author relates her experience in walking the hedge maze at Montrose Park in Washington, D.C. It describes the permanent labyrinth on the grounds of Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Mamaroneck, New York. Thousands of labyrinths have sprung up in recent years, ever since 1991 when Lauren Artress, the canon of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, laid down a large canvas labyrinth in the nave of Saint Thomas Episcopal Church and began teaching people the art of walking it.
