This article presents a conversation with filmmaker Andrei Zvyagintsev about his film "The Banishment." A metaphysical film noir, "The Banishment" focuses on the apparent infidelity of the wife which later becomes spiritual as the temporal medium thickens and slows with sublime menace. It also depicts the failure of violent masculinity in the face of a feminine mystery. The locations for the film, like the sinister urban industrial works of the beginning and the haunting pastoral enclave where the family flees, were meticulously selected. "The Return," which was the first feature film of Zvyagintsev premiered in 2003.
