ABSTRACT
This section outlines the notable events in the rock and roll music sector. "Rocket 88," considered by many to be the first rock single, is released by Ike Turner in 1951. In 1952, disc jockey Alan Freed coins and popularizes the term "Rock and Roll," and proclaims himself the "Father of Rock and Roll." The first Grammy for Best Rock 'n' Roll Recording is awarded to Chubby Checker for "Let's Twist Again" in 1961. In 1971, Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, dies in Paris, France. John Lennon of the Beatles is murdered in New York City in 1980.
