ABSTRACT
The article presents an argument for ending cultural protectionism in Canada. The author argues that protectionist policies are outdated and perform a disservice to Canadian popular culture and identity. The view of popular media as product rather than art is expressed and the importance of competition in developing innovative and quality products is explored. It is the author's opinion that loosening restrictions on foreign popular media will provide necessary competition.
