ABSTRACT
The article reports on a study which found that up to 25% of people in whom psychiatrists would currently diagnose depression may only be reacting normally to stressful events. It cites that the finding could have consequences for the diagnosis of depression and the use of symptom checklists to identify those who may be depressed. The study suggested that depression-like behaviors are common in people who have through life stresses.
