Limiting compression of an ion cloud on a buffer gas in RF fields with a quadratic potential distribution

A model of motion of ions in rf fields with a quadratic potential distribution in the presence of a buffer gas is developed on the basis of gas-kinetic theory. Expressions for the limiting values of charge particle coordinates are derived using the concepts of the theory of trapping zones. The results of analytic calculations are confirmed by the results of computer simulation.
