ABSTRACT
This article looks at the contribution of golf professional Tiger Woods to mass media exposure of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour in the 1990s. Higher ratings, new corporate television and tour sponsors, larger tournament purses and bigger crowds all have resulted directly from Tiger Woods' push onto the PGA Tour in 1996. Woods' appeal beyond the wealthy, country club set also has brought in advertisers that traditionally avoided sponsoring tournaments or television coverage of PGA Tour events. Television ratings continue to rise. Ratings for the National Broadcasting Corporation golf coverage climbed to a 3.1 in 1999 from a 2.7 the year before; American Broadcasting Co. golf ratings jumped to a 2.4 from a 2.2.
