ABSTRACT
The article focuses on improvements in data systems. The author reports that for IT managers, rejuvenating the systems that run older data applications can take the form of adopting mainframe emulation systems, using Web front-ends to improve the user experience, and establishing links between the legacy systems and newer applications. Article topics include the effect of technological advances in the IT market, the value of preserving well-functioning and difficult-to-replace legacy systems, and how cost effectiveness impacts business goals. Commentary by various IT managers, including Anthony Hill, the co-author of the book "CIO Best Practices: Enabling Strategic Value with Information Technology," is provided.
