ABSTRACT
The article discusses the significance of power efficiency and storage capacity of computers of companies in the U.S. Several business enterprises are consolidating its storage and server environment to benefit further by merging their storage-area-network (SAN) environments. According to Gartner, servers take up 40% of a data center's power consumption while storage 37% and storage-related devices including SAN can consume 1,000 watts or more. The five steps in improving storage power-efficiency in a data center includes consolidation, using the most efficient building blocks possible, powering on devices only when needed, by not neglecting cooling efficiency and working with vendors that participate in The Green Grid.
