ABSTRACT
The article discusses the provisions of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 in the U.S. It is noted that the act stopped the balkanization and heavy regulation of the telephone industry. In addition, the act changed the monopolies in the local telephone service market by lifting both territorial restrictions. Moreover, the act increased the number of local and long-distance telephone service providers along with the growth of new technologies.
