The article presents a summary of findings of a study on 401(k) pension plans in the U.S., which are presented before the 2007 ERISA Advisory Council's Working Group on Financial Literacy and the Role of the Employer. The study refutes the views of pension actuaries that the retiree needs a nest egg that is a multiple of 10 to 12 times their annual salary or average salary right before retirement.
