Short rotation coppice willow as low carbon bioenergy farming

This article reports on the emergence of bioenergy crops in a number of European countries that have been grown on short-rotations. There are predictions that biomass will be a more important component of primary energy sources in the future and that woody crops will be the primary source of biomass. Some of the excellent coppice species are willow, poplar and eucalypts. Some of the local environmental benefits of energy crop plantations are soil carbon accumulation, increased soil fertility, and improved biodiversity. In addition, this kind of farming has the potential to complement other land use activities like dairying. However, energy crops grown in short rotation coppice can be susceptible to significant damage caused by a rust pathogen.
