ABSTRACT
This article discusses the nature of Wende. This term is used to describe the current events happening in East Germany. Wende in East Germany has four phases. The first phase refers to the democratic breakthrough as a result of the decision of Hungary to open its borders to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) citizens who wants to leave for the West. The second phase refers to the nationalist revival, wherein the opening of the Wall gave way to capitalist consumption and wealth. The third and fourth phase refers to the capitalist seduction and the consolidation of West German rule in the East, respectively.
