ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the role of low rainfall and harsh snow-free winters as main climate constraints to production on farms supplying a sugar beet factory privately owned by Pfeifer & Langen in Germany. About 1.5 m tonnes of beet from 900 growers are being processed by the factory annually. The average yield of the factory's growers is 45 t/ha compared with the mean yield of 54 t/ha in parts of West Germany. Ralf Brune of Syngenta said that most growers refrain from ploughing to conserve moisture.
