ABSTRACT
This article offers facts about the "Sad Sacks" cartoon characters, which earned a permanent place in the Army lexicon in 1942. The characters were conceptualized and developed by Sgt. George Baker. Published from May 1942 to December 1945, "Yank" magazine provided World War II soldiers with entertainment and comic relief from the war. It became the most-widely read publication in the history of the U.S. Armed Forces. The character of Sad Sack is described as a disheveled-looking soldier with a large nose and big ears.
