The article focuses on the problems faced by information technology (IT) departments managing remote locations. Challenges are listed including scarcity of technical resources, wide area network (WAN) performance constraints, and a dependence on the functionality of the network to use monitoring and management tools. Suggestions for facing these challenges are presented including utilization of an architectural approach that connects IT staff directly to managed devices. The author believes that remote-management solutions should serve as virtual IT administrators and cover functions including routine system monitoring, maintenance, configuration, and recovery tasks.
