The article discusses network access control (NAC) products and approaches. The author suggests the use of agents in NAC can affect device performance and may not be feasible. The 802.1x protocol uses passwords to verify user identities but requires a compatible network and may not be compatible with devices. Inline devices which block device traffic for NAC verification can be expensive and may not detect all devices. The DHCP proxy, which assigns nonroutable Internet protocol (ID) addresses to elements connecting to the network, is easy to install but can be bypassed.
