ABSTRACT
The article presents information on various disasters in chemical industries. On September 21, 2001, a 300-tonne stockpile of ammonium nitrate exploded at Atofina Chemical Inc.'s Grande Paroisse SA fertilizer plant, destroying the site and reducing buildings in the city center 3 km away to rubble. The Grande Paroisse incident had a major impact on the petrochemical sector, at great cost financially and to its reputation.
