ABSTRACT
The article presents views of Jan Arthur Hammer, Odfjell president, on safety of shipping chemicals with reference to the disaster of the Bow Marine which sank 50 miles off the coast of Virginia. He says that safety issues are the single biggest challenge facing the chemical shipping industry. He blames failures in training and safety measures responsible for the catastrophe. He believes new costs will see the price of shipping rise in the future.
