ABSTRACT
The article focuses on a garment that can prevent colds and flu and never needs washing, and another garment that destroys harmful gases and protects the wearer from smog and air pollution. The author reports that the dress and metallic denim jacket, featured in April 2007 at a Cornell Design League fashion show, contain cotton fabrics coated with nanoparticles. The pieces were designed by 2007 graduate Olivia Ong in the College of Human Ecology's Department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design. Consisting of electrostatistically charged nanoparticles that create a protective shield around the cotton fibers in the top of the dress as well as the sleeves, hood, and pockets of the jacket, the fabrics were created by dipping them in solutions containing synthesized nanoparticles.
