ABSTRACT
Under which conditions did a special sociology of sports emerge? On the basis of examples in the United States, Britain and France, the analysis emphasizes two developments which led to the constitution of this special field of research. First, social dynamics encompass sports and stimulate various groups to see it as a "social problem" to be handled by sociologists. Second, a change in the intellectual climate makes it possible to formulate questions which can be answered by the sociological study of sports and the various ways to relate to one's body. Such topics appeared in American sociology, in the theoretical work of Elias, of Bourdieu and in cultural studies.
