ABSTRACT
The article discusses the acquisition of the concrete island drilling structure (CIDS) of the Exxon Neftegas Limited (ENL) from Global Marine Drilling Company. The author reported that the original CIDS was a mobile offshore drilling unit that was built for Global Marine Development Incorporated in the early 1980's. It was designed particularly for drilling in harsh arctic offshore conditions in 35 to 50 feet of water depths. The design offered both economic and environmental rewards over the man-made gravel islands common in Alaskan waters. The modifications in CIDS and the drilling and accommodation upgrades are also reported.
