ABSTRACT
The article points out that in popular music, hip hop and rhythm and blues (R&B), the distinction between songwriting and beatmaking during the production process has become blurred. In the current setting, instead of being marketed or sold like commodities, beats have become custom-built and ideas are now mostly generated by the musician and the producer in the recording studio.
