ABSTRACT
This article discusses open specifications that are available to suppliers of hardware equipment building blocks, boards, and software. Vendors can achieve standardized communications platforms by implementing these specifications. The benefits of standardization include lower integration costs, broader product innovation, and increased return on investment. The barriers involved in realizing these benefits include incompatibility with existing products, slow adoption of specifications, lack of interoperability, and the sheer number of specifications and options.
