ABSTRACT
This article discusses whether Advanced Telecommunication Computing Architecture (ATCA) and MIcro Telecommunication Architecture (MicroTCA) Standards will drive network convergence and whether providers are ready to accept Commercial Off-the Shelf (COTS). COTS is a term for modular components and systems which are manufactured with the intention that they will be tailored for specific uses by the customer. This concept is utilized in the military, telecommunication, and industrial automation industries. This article examines the history and challenges of COTS developments for the telecommunication carrier equipment markets.
