The article discusses the cost of alcohol and substance addiction to business organizations. Government statistics suggest that between 10 million and 17 million working days a year are lost because of alcohol alone and the economic costs to business output are estimated at a staggering £6.4 billion. According to a survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and "People Management," 60 percent now have health and safety policies covering drugs and alcohol, while 57 percent regulate the use of alcohol at work.
