ABSTRACT
The article discusses the relationship between the symbolism of border framing and so-called limning miniature portraits painted in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century in England. The author focuses on the paintings of Nicholas Hilliard and Issac Oliver and applies the concept of "parergon" to the presentation of both the border and the painted image. The author contends that strategies for framing and the expressive elements of the faces painted reveal key aspects of the meaning of elite culture.
