Campylobacter and bacterial gastroenteritis

The article discusses Campylobacter as the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in developed countries. It states that Campylobacter is one of the most common causes of diarrhea in Canadian travelers to developing countries . Symptoms of the disease include bloody, abdominal pain, fever and vomiting and the diagnosis is done through isolation of Campylobacter in stool specimens. Since Campylobacter is stated to lead to sporadic infections, the drugs for treatment recommended include erythromycin and azithromycin. To combat the disease it suggests drinking treated water and pasteurized milk, adequately cooking meats and avoiding cross-contamination of foods in the kitchen. Also emphasized are infection control measures along the farm-to-fork continuum .
